Elderly Danes’ huge fine for illegal rentals

Couple in seventies hit for renting too many holiday homes
A couple from Jutland in their seventies have been fined DKK 2 million (€269,000) for renting out too many summer and holiday homes between 2005 and 2012.
The couple, aged 76 and 71, are reported to have earned DKK 12 million by leasing 18 summerhouses on the coast in towns like Blåvand and Henne.
The law states that you can own all the holiday homes you want but can only rent out two, and only then if they are actually used by the owner.
The couple deny they rented more homes than the rules allow and are appealing against an August 2015 district court decision. Now, however, the Vestre Landsret (high court) has agreed with the district court.
In addition, the couple will have to pay a DKK 10,000 fine per month per cottage rented illegally.
The couple have since sold most of the homes but maintain seven properties – which are still being rented.
