Emergency landing after pilot passes out

Alaska Airlines pilot loses consciousness with the flu

An Alaska Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Seattle made an emergency landing at Portland, Oregon, after its pilot passed out. Curiously, the incident is the second fainting spell involving the US carrier in 10 days. While crew and passengers tried to revive the pilot, helping him to a vacant passenger seat, the co-pilot took control of the Boeing 737-700 and landed it safely.
“Doctors suspect he became ill due to food poisoning or the flu virus,” said Paul McElroy, an airline spokesman. He added that the two fainting incidents were a “bizarre coincidence”.
On January 22, an Alaska Airlines co-pilot with the flu fainted on a Seattle-Las Vegas flight, also resulting in an emergency landing.
