Emirates to start Dubai-Auckland via Bali

Flights via Bali allow the airline to continue serving Auckland via a stopover, maximising passenger loads.

Emirates will launch flights between Dubai and Auckland, New Zealand, via Denpasar in Bali starting this coming June, using Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, it announced today.

As with other Fifth Freedom flights – the right to fly between two countries if the flight originates or ends in a third country – passengers will be able to travel only between Auckland and Bali or between Bali and Dubai, without having to make the full Dubai-Auckland journey.

The service starts from June 14, with three-class aircraft including eight private suites in first class and 42 seats in business, some of which have angled-flat beds, although on newer planes they are all fully flat.

The new route introduces Emirates’ first class to Bali for the first time, as the current Bali-Dubai flights offer only business and economy.

Starting a stopover
Emirates already runs daily non-stop Auckland-Dubai flights using an A380 as well as a daily A380 service between Dubai and Christchurch via Sydney.

But it is stopping its separate Melbourne-Auckland and Brisbane-Auckland routes from this March, Australian Business Traveller reports.

The new flights via Bali allow the airline to continue serving Auckland via a stopover point, in order to maximise passenger loads on all parts of the journey – as the only carrier to fly Auckland-Bali direct, year-round.

Sir Tim Clark, president of Emirates, explains that the additional capacity is due to strong demand for travel to Bali, and to Auckland, adding that he expects it to be “well received by our customers, not only in New Zealand and Indonesia, but also from our global network particularly from markets like the UK, Europe and the Middle East.”
