Estonia: Five times more tourists over 20 years

Number of tourists has grown more than fivefold in 20 years
The number of tourists staying in accommodation in Estonia has grown by more than five times over the last 20 years, reaching 3.1 million people in 2015.
With the exception of 2009, the number of tourists in the Baltic country’s places of accommodation rose steadily from 1996, when 587,900 stayed overnight, to 2015. While accommodated tourists were registered in 1996, the number rose to 3.1 million by 2015.
However, tourism remains very seasonal in the Baltics and the number of tourists exceeds the annual average only in the May-August period. Yet seasonal differences have slowly diminished over the last 12 years, Statistics Estonia chief analyst Mart Leesment said.
“Assuming that drastic climate change and a resultant change in the accustomed way of life will not happen in the next few years, accommodation establishments will have to grapple with seasonalism also in the future,” he is reported as saying.
