EU deal to end “roaming rip-offs”

Agreement reached on new mobile roaming rules

The Council of Europe and the European Parliament say they have paved the way for a new regulation on roaming on public mobile communications networks within the EU. The objective, they explain, is to establish a common approach so that users do not pay excessive prices for EU-wide roaming services when travelling within the EU.
Price caps for phone calls charged to consumers, excluding VAT, will be €0.29 per minute for calls made and €0.08 per minute for calls received, to begin from July 2012; €0.24 per minute for calls made and €0.07 for calls received from July 2013; and €0.19 per minute for calls made and €0.05 for calls received from July 2014.
For data roaming, the price will be €0.70 per megabyte from July 2012, €0.45 per megabyte from July 2013 and €0.20 per megabyte from July 2014.
