EU votes to make passenger rights stronger

New rules to limit airlines’ exemptions to avoid pay-outs

A vote in the European Parliament favours rules that make it easier for stranded air passengers to claim compensation from airlines.

The vote on Wednesday takes Europe closer to tightening compensation rules, by limiting the exemptions carriers can use to avoid pay-outs for flight delays or cancellations.

The proposed rules say that a delay could result in compensation of up to €600, depending on the length of the delay and distance of the flight.

The rules also order airline employees to inform passengers about their rights and about procedures for complaints and reimbursements.

“It’s a David versus Goliath story, as only 2% of passengers actually get compensation after filing a complaint against an airline,” said parliamentarian Georges Bach.
