Site puts 52 small towns in head-to-head voting battles
On a hunt for beautiful but lesser known travel destinations, the independent travel resource GlobalGrasshopper teamed up with Hotel.info to find the best small towns in Europe. It put 52 of them in head-to-head voting battles to see which came first.
Each town was chosen for its picturesque qualities, hotel reviews, social signals and more. After weeks of voting and discussion, the winner of Europe’s Best Big-Time Small Destinations 2014 was declared as Ribe, Denmark.
With over 22,000 votes cast, there was a very close battle between Ribe and Obidos in Portugal. Ronda in Spain and Portree in Scotland also featured highly in the scoring.
“Denmark’s oldest town (dating back to the early 8th century), Ribe is a beautiful authentic slice of Danish life,” GlobalGrasshopper said. “Wander the old town, meandering through narrow cobblestone streets lined with crooked half-timbered houses, or explore the ancient Cathedral, before climbing the Commoner’s Tower to gaze over the rooftops.”
