Europe airlines unite for new EU aviation strategy

Legacy and low-cost airline bosses agree to work together
The heads of Europe’s five largest airline groups have agreed to work together to lobby for a new European Union aviation strategy.
Carsten Spohr (Lufthansa Group), Alexandre de Juniac (Air France KLM), Willie Walsh (IAG), Carolyn McCall (easyJet) and Michael O’Leary (Ryanair) have all agreed on a number of measures in response the EU Transport Commissioner’s consultation.
The four measures are: Helping to create a “simple efficient regulatory structure”; lowering the cost of airports in the EU; reducing cost of air traffic control provision; stimulating more economic activity.
“As the new Transport Commissioner prepares a new Aviation Strategy for Europe she must drive more competition, encourage more efficiency and help reduce costs in other parts of our industry (such as monopoly airports and Air Traffic Control providers) and reduce the tax burden on passengers,” the five chief executives said.
Between them, the five airlines carried 420 million passengers in 2014, accounting for half of the passenger journeys in Europe. The new commissioner, Violeta Bulc, is due to unveil a series of measures later in 2015 designed to boost the aviation sector’s competitiveness.
