Europe booming for hotel construction

Hilton more bullish in Europe than Marriott or IHG
The hotel construction pipeline in Europe currently consists of 1,062 hotels and 172,063 guestrooms, up 13% over the last year, according to US-based Lodging Econometrics.
Under construction are 527 projects and 91,195 rooms, up 30% by hotel projects year-on-year. Projects due to start construction in the next 12 months total 291 with 44,757 rooms, up 28%.
The long-term trend is downward, however, with projects in the early planning stage at 244 with 36,111 guestrooms, down 20%.
Top companies are Hilton with 164 hotels in the construction pipeline in Europe and 26,182 rooms; Marriott International with 151 hotels and 26,631 rooms; and InterContinental Hotels Group with 101 hotels and 17,249 rooms.
Top brands in these companies are Hampton Inn with 68 hotels and 10,268 rooms, Marriott’s Moxy with 45 hotels and 8,677 rooms and Holiday Inn Express with 47 hotels and 7,634 rooms.
Seven Hampton by Hilton properties are due to open by the end of 2017, in Hamburg, London Stansted Airport, Humberside Airport, Iasi in Romania, Freiburg, Lublin and Edinburgh.
Cities in Europe with the biggest pipelines are London (89 hotels, 16,339 rooms), Moscow (41 hotels, 8,848 rooms) and Istanbul (35 hotels, 6,284 rooms).
