Europe to investigate drone strike risk

Sharp rise in near-misses between planes and drones
Following a sharp rise in near-misses between passenger planes and drones, Europe’s aviation safety authorities have established a task force to urgently investigate the dangers of such collisions.
Civil drones are used for everything from photography to crop surveillance and their use is rising rapidly and, as with this recent incident, pilots are increasingly reporting them very close to their planes.
Much research has been carried out into bird strikes, but little is known about what could happen if a drone was sucked into an engine.
The European Aviation Safety Agency will lead the inquiry, analysing how vulnerable aircraft windows, engines and airframes are to drone strikes. Results will be published at the end of July.
