European air traffic controllers plan strike

Massive flight disruption likely on January 29

Considerable flight disruption is likely throughout Europe on January 29. European air traffic control strikes are now scheduled to take place on that date.

The Air Traffic Controllers European Unions Coordination (ATCEUC), which represents 14,000 flight controllers in 28 European countries, says it plans to strike in protest against safety and savings targets planned by the European Commission. The ATCEUC argues that the Commission’s targets would endanger the safe provision of services.

The strike is a revival of an earlier action planned in October that was postponed when the European Commission said it was willing to renegotiate.

Germany’s air traffic controllers plan to strike for one hour on January 29 in a show of support for the Europe-wide strike.
