Europe’s northern hub gets makeover

Helsinki Airport prepares for 20 million pax by 2020
Helsinki Airport is entering a large-scale expansion that aims to improve its facilities and strengthen its competitive position among the big European airports. The improvements are expected to take several years.
The development program was launched in spring 2014 with the aim of major improvement in services, facilities and traffic arrangements by 2020. This is the 65-year-old airport’s seventh expansion and has an overall budget of €900 million.
The buildings’ Scandinavian style will be highlighted in the renovations and services like free Wi-Fi, art galleries and sleeping pods will continue to be available.
“In developing Helsinki Airport we have kept Finnish design and architecture in mind. The use of glass and wooden elements brings lightness and a natural atmosphere into the terminal,” says chief designer Tuomas Silvennoinen of PES Architects.
By 2020, the airport, which originally opened in 1952, expects to provide services for 20 million passengers a year.
In 2015, the airport went through its biggest service revamp to date as 70 new or renewed cafés, restaurants and shops opened. The current renovation project will be carried out gradually, increasing terminal areas by 45% and baggage handling capacity by 50%. In June, the non-Schengen waiting area will be expanded, as will the capacity of the border and transit passenger controls.
