Faroes see record warm winter

Islands record highest-ever average temperature
Temperatures in the Faroes never drop very low, thanks to the islands’ close proximity to the Gulf Stream. But they have never been this high before.
This winter season, the capital Tórshavn has recorded its highest average temperature since records began in 1890-91. December, for example, saw an average temperature of 6.9 degrees.
“The average temperature for December 2016 and January-February 2017 ended up at 6.1 degrees, which beat the previous record of 5.5 degrees set in 2006,” said climatologist John Cappelen.
It was as much as 2.2 degrees warmer than the 30-year average for 1981-2010.
Eastern Greenland is also seeing record-high temperatures. The second half of 2016 was especially warm, with temperatures in November a full 7.9 degrees above normal. In some areas, ice in Greenland appeared a month later than usual.
