Female tourists shun India out of fear

India’s image marred for many travellers after attacks on women

Recent attacks on women in India have horrified the world. And a new study is providing the first glimpse of how the incidents are impacting the country’s tourism industry. According to a survey released Sunday by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India, the number of visitors arriving in India has dropped by 25% in the last three months.

The survey polled 1,200 tour operators across the country, showed that the number of female tourists fell by 35% during the same time period. 72% of the tour operators surveyed said they have noticed travellers change their minds about coming to India.  Most cancellations come from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia. The country has been facing alarming headlines for months.

However, India’s Ministry of Tourism and the Travel Agents Association of India did not immediately respond to a request for comment.  Ashish Sanghrajka, a travel agent who specializes in India at Big Five Tours & Expeditions in Stuart, Fla, claims that travellers are certainly aware of the recent violence when considering a trip to the region.
