Finnair aims to double Europe-Asia by 2020

Deliveries of 11 Airbus A350s are key to this growth

Finnair is aiming to double the revenues it gets from its Europe-Asia traffic by 2020, from a 2010 baseline. The volume is currently 40 million passengers a year.
Key to this growth will be the deliveries of 11 Airbus 350 XWBs, due to start arriving at Finnair from the end of 2015 until around 2019. A further four A350s are on rolling order. The airline’s fleet of seven A340-300s could then be leased out.
“The most important thing in our fleet renewal will happen in 2015 when our A350s will start arriving, that is a major step for us,” Finnair’s chief operations officer Ville Iho confirms. “We have not made any definite decisions on new routes, but we will start replacing the A340s from our fleet first and the destinations that we fly with the A350s would be those routes. […] It could be Tokyo.”
However, Finnair has had to alter its growth plans to fit Airbus’ A350 production delays. Before deliveries finally start, Finnair’s interim solution is to retrofit its fleet with lie-flat business-class seats, a process due for completion by January.
