Finnish airports see “strong start” to year

Chinese passengers visiting Lapland grows 167%
Demand for air transport in Finland grew strongly in the first quarter, with passenger numbers at the country’s airports rising 7% on the same period last year.
One of the main factors behind the trend is the growing interest of Chinese passengers in Finland, above all in the winter season in Lapland, airport operator Finavia claims.
The airports that Finavia runs saw a total of 5,255,893 passengers during the quarter, of which international passengers accounted for 69%.
The growth in passenger volume at Lapland’s airports set a new record, thanks to the booming winter season, with passenger numbers increasing by 21%.
International transit travel, which Finavia describes as “strategically central” to its vision, increased by 4.5%. From the Asian market, the biggest growth in passenger volume was from South Korea. In Lapland, transit passenger numbers from China rose by 167%.
