First of 30 Iberia strikes grounds 150 flights

Pilots’ union insists that Iberia Express launch will cost 8,000 jobs

In the first of 30 one-day strikes protesting the recent launch of its low-cost unit Iberia Express, Iberia pilots went on strike on Monday, causing 150 flights to be grounded. This follows the most recent episode in a bitter confrontation between airline and staff, when Iberia asked a court last week to ban the strikes and to seek compensation for the 12 days of strikes already held since December. The pilots’ union SEPLA insists that Iberia Express will cost 8,000 jobs and the loss of conditions, while the company says it is vital for maintaining profitability.
The pilots now plan to strike every Monday and Friday until July.
