France orders trains too wide for platforms

New French trains in €3 billion deal to expand network

French national rail operator RFF has been left red-faced after a mix-up over the size of new trains ordered by the state-owned rail company SNCF. It confirmed that the SNCF had ordered new trains in a €3 billion deal to expand the network – only to realise they were too wide for most platforms.

A French satirical magazine first broke the story.

€50 million has already been spent on fixing the problem. But more than a thousand platforms out of a total of 8,700 are still in need of adjustment. The platforms that need changing are older ones built many decades ago.

“We discovered the problem a bit late,” an RFF spokesman admitted on French radio. “We recognise that and we accept responsibility on that score.”
