Tourists killed with tour guide camping in Philippines
Three German tourists and their Filipino tour guide have been confirmed dead following the eruption of the Mayon Volcano this week about 340 kilometres southeast of Manila. Another tourist is missing, presumed dead, and others are critical in hospital.
The volcano exploded without warning, throwing massive boulders and a giant cloud of ash into the air. Spending the night camping on the slopes of the volcano were 27 tourists and tour guides. At daybreak they began hiking up to the crater when the eruption happened.
One guide said rocks “as big as a living room” came raining down, killing and injuring members of the group. The injured were taken off the mountain by helicopter and the volcano has since quietened down.
Despite the risks involved, Mayon is a favourite spot for volcano lovers with its perfect cone shape.
