Germany’s Condor airline wants to expand

Charter-flight airline feels strong demand for package tours

The German airline Condor, whose parent company is the struggling tour operator Thomas Cook, says it plans to expand its fleet due to strong demand for package tours. Peter Fankhauser, head of Thomas Cook’s Germany operations, told the weekly magazine Focus that Condor “is very successful with its niche strategy in long distance routes” and is building up its fleet “successively with additional aircraft.”
The airline’s 2011 profit of USD$107.92 million is another reason for its confidence. “I don’t need to tell you what kind of performance that is,” Fankhauser said.
As airlines across the world are being hit by weak demand and high oil prices, it may turn out that airlines like Condor will sustain demand in the civilian aircraft operations of manufacturers Airbus and Boeing.
