Germany cruise market to become world number two?

UK’s 2014 cruise figures will be announced next week
Germany could rival the UK’s position as the world’s second biggest ocean cruise market, 2014 cruise passenger numbers suggest.
Clia Germany revealed at ITB Berlin last week that 1.77 million German passengers took an ocean cruise in 2014 – a notable rise that compares with the 1.7 million that cruised from the UK in 2013. The UK’s 2014 figures will be announced next week at the Cruise Shipping Miami exhibition and conference.
In contrast with Germany, the UK has seen its cruise market largely plateau over recent years, growing only slightly, from 1.701 million in 2011 to 1,726 million in 2013. This 1.5% rise contrasts with a 5% rise in Germany since 2013.
“The ocean cruise market in Germany continues to be one of the fastest-growing tourism sectors,” said Norbert Fiebig, president of the German Travel Association, while Clia Germany says that passenger numbers have increased threefold over the last 10 years.
Seamus Conlon, managing director of Cruise.co.uk said he was unsurprised by the news: “I think Germany was underrepresented before. Its population is much bigger than the UK.”
