Gothenburg gets cruise boost

New cruise terminal to open next to city centre
A new cruise terminal will open near the city centre in Gothenburg next year, and the city is hoping the closer location with give it extra heft when attracting cruise calls.
The port can handle ships of any size and has two dedicated cruise berths. So far, 39 calls are scheduled for 2018, a rise from this year’s 28. Half of the calls next year will use the new America Cruise Terminal.
A high point in 2017 was the maiden call from the 4,000-passenger Norwegian Getaway in June, “the largest cruise ship ever to visit,” Petra Gamerdinger, cruise manager, told Cruise Industry News.
The port also gets winter calls, offering a 30% discount for ships calling in the low season. There are also discounts for volume calls.
“The aim of the city of Gothenburg is to be an attractive destination all year round, and we see potential to attract more cruise calls during summer, autumn, winter and spring,” Gamerdinger says.
