GPS sends tourists on Nordic road closed 50 years ago

Tourists rescued by dog sled on northern Norway’s Finnmark Plateau
A route closed back in the 1960s and now used only by off-road bikes and quad bikes was given by a GPS system as the best way across northern Norway’s Finnmark Plateau. As a result, two tourists had to be rescued by dog sled.
The tourists driving in Arctic Norway wanted to get from Gargia to Masi, which now involves a long detour north to the Riksvei 93, then an hour’s drive south to Masi.
The shorter route, which cuts across the dangerous Beskedes mountain ridge, was the one the GPS recommended. It is never used at all in winter.
“The two tourists took it all very well,” Freddy Eilertsen from Viking Rescue Service Alta told Nordlys, a local newspaper. “We decided to salvage the car when it got light again the next day and as a result the two were picked up by a dog team. It seemed like they had a good time.”
