Helsinki runway to be overhauled in summer

Airport’s runway 2 to be renovated during summer months
Helsinki Airport’s runway 2 will be under renovation throughout the summer, but this is not expected to affect the flow of air traffic, operator Finavia promises.
The three-month closure of runway 2, scheduled for June 5 to September 9, will renovate its southern section beginning at the intersection of runways 1 and 2.
“The renovation will allow us to extend the usage of the renovated section by 14 years. Of course, the main reason is to ensure first-class, safe air traffic,” says Heini Noronen-Juhola, Finavia’s vice president for Helsinki Airport.
Finavia will repave the runway and overhaul its rainwater drainage and lighting. Additionally, the pavement on the runway’s southern section will be replaced. Investment will total €11 million.
Runway 2 was last repaved in 2004. The intersection of runways 1 and 2 was renovated in 2015 during a runway 1 renovation project. Next up, the northern section of the runway will be renovated by 2019.
Finavia warns that the renovation, will have an effect on aircraft noise in different parts of the Helsinki area, with Järvenpää, Tuusula and Kerava getting more noise and Nurmijärvi getting less.
