Horror crash in Phuket kills four tourists

Accident comes after four Swedes were killed on same road

Another horrific road accident in Phuket involving tourists occurred over the weekend, just a month after four young Swedish tourists were among five killed in a crash on the main road north of Phuket. This time, two Russians, a Turk and a Ukrainian – three women and a man – were killed early Saturday evening in a collision on the same road. The driver of a tourist minivan, who fled the scene immediately after the accident, smashed into a truck carrying crates of fish. Five other tourists were rushed to hospital, three of whom are in a critical condition. The road death toll in the area now stands at 14 dead in three major accidents in just over a month. The four young Swedish tourists were killed along with their driver in a pileup on February 1.
There is no enforcement of speed limits in the Phuket region and virtually no education on safety standards is given to the drivers of minibuses and local taxis.
