Hotel trend to be located near airports

Hotels want to be near the terminal – or in it

With ever more people travelling internationally and long distance, there is a construction boom in hotels close to or actually in new airport terminals.

They tend to take one of two forms. The transit hotel caters to travellers passing through, offering a quiet place to sleep, shower and relax. These are nothing particularly new at busy travel hubs.

The other type is the conference centre hotel. It has restaurants and bars and competes with hotels in the city for convention and meeting business, from delegates who may never actually leave the airport.

Airport hotels are an efficient way to have meetings in developing countries where road and rail traffic can be challenging. Starwood recently opened the 349-room Le Méridien at Cairo International Airport’s Terminal 3.

“If you are pressed for time with a meeting with 100 people, the cost and time to move people from the airport to downtown is a factor,” explains Simon Turner, president of global development for Starwood Hotels and Resorts.

Many developers are trying to put airport hotels in the terminal complex so the passenger doesn’t have to take the shuttle. The trend here is also on a higher class of hotel, such as the Crowne Plaza in Singapore’s Changi Airport and the Sama-Sama Hotel in Kuala Lumpur International. Both are resort-like retreats with spas, pools, gardens and lots of meeting space.
