Hurricane Irma to plunge into Caribbean

Caribbean islands and Florida brace for the worst
Caribbean islands and the US state of Florida are bracing for a storm that could be even stronger than Hurricane Harvey, which left catastrophic flooding in its wake.
Hurricane Irma has strengthened to a Category 4 hurricane as it churns westward towards the Caribbean. States of emergency have been declared in Florida and Puerto Rico.
With winds currently reaching 230 km/h, it could become even more powerful in the next two days when it is forecast to hit the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, bringing serious storm surges and up to half a metre of rainfall.
Irma is moving into warmer waters, a very favourable environment for “even further development”, warned a meteorologist for The Weather Channel.
Initially it poses an immediate threat to the Leeward Islands, where it is expected to arrive late Tuesday night, before probably sweeping across Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, the Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos, and Florida.
