Hurtigruten to deploy underwater drones

New drone technology to stream film direct to ships
Hurtigruten passengers sailing on the Norwegian cruise and ferry line’s newest ships will be able to watch the marine life underneath them on TV screens, thanks to new drone technology.
With 90% of the world’s oceans relatively unknown, Hurtigruten aims to take guests to “areas less explored than the surface of Mars”, and will share its material with scientists.
Working closely with Norwegian start-up Blueye Robotics, it will introduce underwater drones on all of its expedition ships, including the hybrid-powered Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen.
The drones feature four thrusters and an HD wide-angle video camera, which will allow guests to view true-colour videos streamed live to screens on the ships and to digital ‘diving masks’ worn by guests on smaller explorer boats.
