Delta takeover of American could destroy oneworld
International Airlines Group, the parent company of British Airways and Iberia, says it would consider taking a stake in American Airlines, its oneworld alliance partner, to stop a takeover of American by IAG rival Delta. As an IAG spokeswoman put it on Sunday: “We would consider taking a stake in American Airlines if that is something that American would welcome.”
These comments follow an article in the UK newspaper the Mail on Sunday that quotes IAG CEO Willie Walsh as saying that his company may buy a small stake if there was a good strategic argument for the investment.
Delta is known to be looking at a takeover of American Airlines, something that could break up the oneworld alliance and put a lot of pressure on IAG’s transatlantic routes.
