Ice hotel told to install fire alarms

Swedish National Board of Housing makes order

The famous IceHotel, carefully reconstructed in Jukkasjärvi, Kiruna, northern Sweden, each winter from massive blocks of ice has been ordered by the Swedish National Board of Housing to install fire alarms.

The hotel, is complying with the order, despite the fact that the property is made entirely from frozen water from a nearby river.

“We were a little surprised when we found out,” Beatrice Karlsson, a hotel spokeswoman, told The Local. “But we do understand. Safety is a primary concern for us. There are indeed things that can catch fire, like the reindeer skins, the mattresses and the pillows.”

The hoteliers realise that they have to comply with the law and that it is just a matter of adaptation.

Every year the hotel is different, Karlsson stressed, and this year surprises include a range of international artists and partnerships – although no other details were given.
