Iceland expands wild tours by “super jeep”

Company explores glaciers, geysers and waterfalls

Many of Iceland’s national parks, waterfalls, geysers, glaciers and other natural wonders are hard to reach and almost 80% of the country is uninhabited. But one company is allowing visitors to get to places cars can’t normally access.

Private tours with Discover Iceland, based in Reykjavik are made in “super jeeps” – heavily modified SUVs – whose huge tyres can traverse sand, snow and rocks.

For example, a tour makes it possible to reach Langjokull, Iceland’s second-biggest glacier, hike on it and see how global warming is affecting it.

“Langjokull is more than 2,000 feet (600 metres) thick, so it’s still a glacier,” says the guide. “But they say it only has about 80 years left before it’s no longer considered one. It’s slowly melting away.”

A new ice cave attraction will open in Langjokull in 2015. Other Discover Iceland experiences include a snowmobile excursion, a visit to a volcanic crater and cruising over rugged lava fields to Hvitarvatn, a glacial lake, and Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls.
