Iceland volcano alert raised to red again

Kilometre-long fissure eruption begins in lava field

The aviation warning level near the Bardarbunga volcano has been raised again to red after an eruption overnight. The Icelandic Met Office made the decision after a kilometre-long fissure eruption began in a lava field north of the Vatnajokull glacier. Airspace is now closed above the eruption up to a height of 5,000ft (1,500m).

The fissure eruption occurred between the Askja caldera and the Dyngjujokull Glacier, all of which is part of the Bardabunga system. No volcanic ash has yet been detected, but a coast-guard aircraft will survey the area today.

The potential threat of volcanic activity to air travel has been kept at the second-highest level, orange, for over a week, except for a brief red alert last weekend.
