Icelandair CEO: “more seats to more destinations”

Airline expands network this summer using fleet of Boeing 757s

In a brief interview with anna.aero, Icelandair CEO Birkir Holm Gudnason says that with the airline increasing its frequencies on routes to Europe and North America, it will be offering “more seats to more destinations than ever before in the airline’s history” this summer – about 14% more than last year. As previously reported, Icelandair has just launched its new route to Denver, Colorado, its ninth destination in North America. And, in addition to its two daily flights to London Heathrow, it will launch twice-weekly flights to London Gatwick from mid-October and is looking at further routes for 2013.
Icelandair maintains a fleet largely consisting of Boeing 757s, an aircraft type that is no longer manufactured. Gudnason explains this by saying that “the 757 suits our network very well. […] All the aircraft have been refurbished in recent years with leather seats and personal in-flight entertainment systems. Given the relatively long average sector length that we operate, that results in less stress on the airframe. We believe the 757s still have many years of useful service ahead of them.”
