Icelandair to expand with routes to Canada

Group announces international growth plans for 2014

Icelandair says its flight schedule for 2014 will be the biggest in the company’s history, growing 18% from this year. Three new destinations will be added and frequencies increased to cities in North America and Europe.

Flights to Edmonton, capital of Alberta, Canada, will start on March 26 and continue until January 2015, four times a week. Twice-weekly flights to Vancouver start on May 13 and continue to October 12. And a Geneva service starts on May 24 and continues twice weekly until September 23.

Icelandair forecasts the number of passengers in 2014 to be over 2.6 million, compared to around 2.3 million this year. Three Boeing 757s will be added to the fleet next year, enlarging it from 18 to 21 aircraft.

The implementation of a new air traffic agreement between Iceland and Canada opens up new possibilities for flights between the two countries, the airline says, and for connecting flights to and from European destinations.
