Japan aims at Olympics with biggest ever hotel

Japan’s biggest hotel to rise in 2019 with 2,400 keys
Just in time for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the biggest hotel in Japan is scheduled to open in 2019. It will rise in Yokohama, close to the Minatomirai district, which also contains the Pacifico Yokohama convention centre and Japan’s largest Chinatown. Tokyo is 40 minutes away by train.
The APA Hotel & Resort Yokohama Bay Tower will occupy a 37-floor tower on the site of a disused wharf. With a total floor area of 58,000m2 and 2,400 guestrooms, the property will have the highest room count in a single hotel in Japan.
The APA Group operates midscale hotels across the country. But it announced an ambitious expansion plan in the run-up to the Olympics. It is developing a property at Makuhari, east of central Tokyo, and a 1,000-room hotel in the capital’s Ryogoku district, close to the national sumo stadium.
The company says it will also expand overseas in the coming years, expressing a desire to work with partners in Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea.
Of the 50 biggest hotels in the world, 26 are in one city (and nine of the top 13): Las Vegas. The world’s biggest hotel is also the seventh biggest building in the world, the Venetian Las Vegas + The Palazzo, with 7,117 rooms and suites.
