Kazakhstan says “Borat” boosts tourism

Ten times as many Kazakh visas are being issued

After six years of bitterness, Kazakhstan has finally decided to love Borat, the character created in Sacha Baron Cohen’s movie of the same name. The full title of the 2006 film was, in deliberately poor English, “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan”. In it, a fictitious TV reporter from the country visits the US and causes offence in multiple ways. The movie was banned in Kazakh cinemas.
But now Kazakh Foreign Minister Erzhan Qazykhanov has admitted that Borat has boosted foreign tourist arrivals. He said that ten times as many Kazakh visas are being issued as there were six years ago.
