KLM gives exotic twist to Costa Rica route

The Dutch carrier is adding the possibility to fly beyond the capital San José to Guanacaste Liberia on the Pacific coast.

KLM has revealed it is adding a new destination in Central America to its network with the opening of Guanacaste Liberia in Costa Rica.

From the start of the Dutch carrier’s winter 2019 schedules, this region on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast will be served four times a week with a direct flight from Amsterdam Schiphol.

However, the flights will make an intermediate landing in San José, Costa Rica’s capital and biggest city, a destination that KLM is already flying to in its winter programme.

Guanacaste is a region in the northwest of Costa Rica, about 240 kilometres from San José. The city of Liberia is mostly used as a waystation to move on to Guanacaste’s more developed surrounding cities and white-sand beaches.

“Guanacaste is the second largest region of Costa Rica. The region is known for its beautiful nature, which makes it a unique holiday destination in combination with San José. All this makes Guanacaste Liberia a valuable addition to our KLM network,” says Pieter Elbers, KLM’s chief executive.

Flexible return
KLM will commence service between Amsterdam, San José and Guanacaste-Liberia on October 29, on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The flights will be operated with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, with 30 seats in business class, 45 in economy comfort and 219 in economy.

KL0717/KL0719 departs Schiphol at 11:35, arriving in San José at 17:15 local time. From there, the flight departs at 19:15 towards Guanacaste Liberia to arrive at 20:10.

After a short 65-minute stop on the ground, the flight continues under the same flight number directly to Amsterdam-Schiphol, departing out of Guanacaste Liberia at 21:15 local time to arrive in Amsterdam at 13:20 the following day.

KLM says it is possible to arrive in San José, and depart from Liberia on the same ticket, “making it an ideal combination for all travellers who want to discover the beautiful nature and pura vida of Costa Rica”.

Likewise, passengers originating in Costa Rica can start and end their journey in either San José or Guanacaste Liberia in both directions on the same ticket.
