South American giant opts to join oneworld alliance
The South American giant airline group LATAM has decided to join the oneworld alliance. Chile’s LAN, already a oneworld member, and Brazil’s TAM, part of the Star Alliance, completed a merger last year that created Latin America’s biggest airline. Now TAM will leave Star in the second quarter of 2014.
Reuters says that the decision is “shaking up international air travel in Brazil ahead of the 2014 soccer World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.”
“In the view of LATAM’s board, this global alliance is the most adequate for the interests of the company and has the most synergies for LATAM Airlines Group, and also offers the best benefits, most connection and products to our passengers,” the airline explained in a statement to Chile’s regulator, which has previously been against LATAM’s participation in an alliance.
