LCCs to be forced out of Schiphol?

Special commission on future of airport excludes easyJet

After being left out of talks about the future of Amsterdam’s hub airport Schiphol, the CEO of easyJet Carolyn McCall said she was concerned that budget airlines may be excluded from using the airport in the future. McCall said she was “really surprised” at being left out of the discussions, which had been arranged by the Dutch economy minister and to which only KLM had been invited to participate.
The minister’s special commission is to decide what kind of flights will have priority at state-owned Schiphol – possibly including the idea that low-cost carriers will be forced to use more distant airports such as Lelystad. KLM has 70% of the airport’s capacity, but easyJet is number two.
“I’ve never come across anything like it,” McCall told the Dutch newspaper Financieele Dagblad. “The government is only allowing one interested party to talk about the future of its own airport.”
