Lithuanian gateway records 67% growth

Vilnius International Airport sets record January in 2012

Vilnius International Airport, Lithuania’s main international airport – it has three of them – is reporting the busiest January in its history (total of 129,300), handling 66% more passengers than the same month in 2011.
“We hope that the unstable economic situation in Europe will not interfere with the ambitious growth plans of Vilnius airport and we will be pleased to see an even higher number of new routes and new airlines opening their bases at the airport,” said the country’s transport minister, Eligijus Masiulis.
Vilnius International Airport handled 1.7 million passengers in 2011, up almost 25% on the previous year. However, this pales in comparison to neighbouring Latvia’s Riga International Airport, which saw 5.1 million passengers in 2011.
