Lufthansa and pilots to resume negotiations

Vereinigung Cockpit pilots’ union: “There is contact”
A month after negotiations were postponed following the Germanwings tragedy on March 24, Lufthansa and the union representing its pilots have resumed contact, news agency Reuters reports.
Talks to put an end to a damaging series of strikes were put on hold when a plane operated by Lufthansa’s budget subsidiary crashed in the French Alps, killing all 150 people aboard.
“There is contact [with the airline],” Ilja Schulz, president of the Vereinigung Cockpit pilots’ union, commented yesterday.
The pilots have organised many strikes over the last year in a dispute over early retirement benefits. The pilots also want mediation over issues such as pay and cost cuts. The last strike took place just days before the Germanwings crash. A poll at the time found that 55% of Germans surveyed thought the strike action was disproportionate to the situation. Of the people polled, 52% thought the union was the source of the conflict, while 19% blamed Lufthansa.
