Lufthansa eyes purchase TAP Portugal

Ownership would give network advantages for Latin America

The Financial Times reports today that Lufthansa is interested in buying Portugal’s flag carrier Transportes Aéreos Portugueses (TAP), a fellow Star Alliance member. The Portuguese carrier is due to be sold later this year. Christoph Franz, the German giant’s chief executive, told the business daily that Lufthansa would certainly study the case for purchasing TAP, especially since both carriers are set to compete on routes to the fast-growing Latin American market.
“TAP is one of the larger carriers who manage the gateway to Latin America, and that is clearly a good reason to at least listen if your colleagues [at TAP] are giving you a phone call,” Franz said.
