Lufthansa hunts for buyer for part of IT unit

Infrastructure operates data centres, networks, telephony

As Lufthansa prepares to overhaul its IT division, it is looking for a buyer for part of the unit and has already held early talks with interested parties.

Lufthansa Systems will be split into three – Infrastructure, Airline Solutions and Industry Solutions. Infrastructure, which employs 1,400 people, will be sold. The other two will stay within the Lufthansa group.

Infrastructure operates data centres, networks and telephony, needing large investment and making economies of scale critical. It accounts for 40% of Lufthansa Systems’ total €640 million turnover, but makes up only 25% of its profit.

The move is part of Lufthansa’s group-wide restructuring, aimed at improving operating profit by €1.5 billion by end 2015, compared to 2011.
