Lufthansa may buy stake in SAS, insiders say

Minority stake would bring influence on SAS’s strategy
Lufthansa is in talks with SAS on expanding the number of destinations and taking a stake in the Scandinavian airline, unnamed insiders are suggesting.
Two people close to the German airline have affirmed that Lufthansa has been in talks with the owners of SAS since the autumn, and that the discussions may lead to the German carrier taking a stake in SAS or some other kind of partnership.
“SAS could be docked onto budget platform Eurowings”, one of them commented.
Lufthansa launched Eurowings in 2015 as it tries to successfully break into the low-cost market.
A full takeover of SAS is unlikely, industry analysts say, but taking a minority stake would probably come with a seat on the board and direct influence on SAS’s strategy. SAS declined to comment on the story to Reuters.
Besides SAS, Lufthansa is also talking to Africa-centric Brussels Airlines, the sources said, and it is “as good as certain” that at a supervisory board meeting on April 27 it will present a deal to buy the 55% it does not already own.
