Lufthansa pilots demand clarity on new offer

Until talks resume, more strikes remain a possibility
The union representing Lufthansa’s pilots says it needs more information from the airline about its latest offer before it can decide whether to return to the negotiating table. Until then, more strikes remain a possibility.
Six days of strikes organised by the Vereinigung Cockpit union since Wednesday last week grounded 4,460 flights, affecting more than half a million passengers.
This Wednesday, Lufthansa said it was dropping a demand for pilots to work longer hours in exchange for a wage increase. It is now offering to raise pay by 4.4% in two instalments in 2016 and 2017 and to make a one-off payment worth 1.8 months’ pay.
But the union says that elements of the new offer are unclear: “VC expects a firm and clear offer in order to be able to determine whether to resume talks, with a mediator or not,” it said in a statement.
A Lufthansa spokesman responded that the carrier would discuss the points of its offer with the union directly and “promptly”.
