Lufthansa strike to continue into Saturday

Pilots will continue strike to hit more long-haul flights
Pilots will continue this week’s strike at Lufthansa to hit more long-haul flights on Saturday, the union Vereinigung Cockpit says.
The strike grounded more than half of the airline’s long-haul flights on Thursday and about 790 short- and medium-haul flights are cancelled so far for Friday. This latter number includes 90 flights axed because of a strike by air traffic controllers in Italy.
Vereinigung Cockpit wants to force Lufthansa to stop plans to change early retirement benefits and cost cuts, but the airline insists these changes are needed if it is to successfully fight aggressive low-cost and Middle Eastern competition.
Neither side shows any sign of backing down, Reuters reports, and the dispute could continue for a long time to come.
Long-haul flights and Lufthansa subsidiaries Germanwings, Eurowings, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Air Dolomiti are unaffected on Friday.
