Lufthansa to place $10bn aircraft order

Airline looks at very latest Boeing and Airbus planes

Lufthansa is likely to place an order in mid-September for around 50 widebody jets worth more than $10 billion at list prices, two insiders told the news agency Reuters. The airline’s board of directors and supervisory board are expected to approve the order.

The German giant said earlier that it expected to make an order in the second half of 2013. Now, however, final approval is expected at a supervisory board meeting on September 18, after the executive board makes its own initial decision.

Lufthansa is looking at the 787 Dreamliner (probably the 787-10), Boeing’s still-to-be-launched 777X (probably the 777X-9) and Airbus A350s (the A350-1000). The A350 is due to make its maiden flight in June. It is not yet clear whether the order will be a mix of these or just one aircraft type.
