Lufthansa to plan new low-cost carrier?

Management to present strategy update to supervisory board

Tomorrow the management at Lufthansa is scheduled to present a strategy update to the supervisory board – including plans for a new European low-cost carrier. No firm decisions are likely to be made at the meeting, but the idea for a new budget airline reflects changes in the industry in Europe that were highlighted by the recent strikes at Lufthansa, the German business weekly WirtschaftsWoche writes in its issue this week.
Lufthansa has not yet said exactly how damaging the strikes were, but the business weekly speculates they may have cost the airline €100 million in lost revenue as passengers booked with rival airlines. The strikes cancelled around 1,737 flights scheduled to carry 187,614 passengers. A further 165,598 passengers were hit by delays.
