Lufthansa wins approval for transatlantic tie-up

Lufthansa, United, Continental, Air Canada get EU nod

Lufthansa, United, Continental and Air Canada have got the go-ahead for a transatlantic tie-up. Approval from EU antitrust regulators came after the carriers agreed to give up airport slots in Frankfurt and New York.
The planned tie-up between the four Star Alliance members, embracing revenue sharing, pricing and capacity pacts, started a European Commission investigation four years ago. The EU was worried that passengers particularly in premium would have to pay higher prices.
The airlines responded that they would allow competitors to sell tickets on the Frankfurt-New York route as well as give them access to their own connecting traffic.
The commission approved a similar transatlantic alliance between oneworld members British Airways, American Airlines and Iberia in July 2010.
