Luxury hotel brands rush to Puerto Rico

Large number of posh properties attract high-end guests

Peak-season rates at the Dorado Beach, an ultra-luxury Ritz-Carlton Reserve that opened in Puerto Rico in December, start at $1,499 a night. The resort has three golf courses, a five-acre spa including two “tree-house treatment rooms”, a celebrity-chef restaurant and 114 oceanfront rooms, some of them with rooftop plunge pools.
A startling number of new high-end brands are opening properties in Puerto Rico, including Four Seasons, J.W. Marriott, St. Regis, Waldorf-Astoria and W, while the Condado Vanderbilt in San Juan which opened in 1919 is getting a $220 million renovation after being closed for 16 years.
After decades of losing tourists to surrounding islands, Puerto Rico is now reaping the rewards of easy access – including a direct three-hour flight from New York – tax incentives and a wide range of entertainment including adventure, golf, culture and cuisine.
